Now How Much Would You Pay?

Salad bowl.
OK! Let’s play a game!

How much would you pay for a salad bowl?

Don’t answer yet!

It’s made of aluminum!

But wait! There’s more! The company that makes them has been in business since 1892!

Did we mention that it’s aluminum? Even better…an aluminum alloy?

Five dollars? Ten dollars? Fifteen dollars? Remember, while a plastic, wooden, or ceramic salad bowl can easily be had for those prices, this one is aluminum!

Try ninety nine dollars.

That’s 99. As in “Max Smart’s Partner”. As in “One less than 100″. As in “For that price, you could get 20 five dollar bowls”.

Ninety-nine dollars. For. A. Salad. Bowl.

But look! It’s a magic bowl that keeps hot things hot and cool things cool!

So…uhm…how long does your salad usually sit in the bowl at an outdoor party? And just how good is this bowl at keeping flies from landing on your salad, if it’s sitting around, uneaten, long enough that you’d want a magic bowl to keep it cool? (And, uhm, might I suggest that you try surrounding a much less expensive bowl with ice?)

Call it a sign that America has not yet entered Great Depression II: Electric Boogaloo. If there are still people out there with money to spend on hundred dollar salad bowls, the economy is still sound.
